Admissions policies and procedures are tentative as of APRIL 1, 2011. They will be reviewed by the director, and approved by the Board of Trustees before these policies and procedures are in effect for applicants.

 

Policies

Twelve schools, at twelve sites, comprise the Academies of National/Global Economic Leadership, an educational network. This network of schools has admission policies, as follows:

  1. A NEARLY EQUAL number of young women and young men will be admitted. This is applicable to the network as a whole, and to each of the sites individually.
  2. Only students who are ready for the eleventh grade will be admitted.
  3. Applicants are expected to be mature. Successful applicants will USUALLY REACH the age of 16 prior to the first day of class.
  4. Applicants are expected to be motivated AND INNER-DIRECTED. Successful applicants will have completed a three-week orientation course during the summer before the first day of class.
  5. Applicants are admitted in one of three categories:
    • Category U. A student gifted in language acquisition, with a strong interest in mastery of the English language, and study of two other international languages (for example, French, Chinese, Hausa, Hindi, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish or Swahili).
    • Category V. A student active in extra-curricular activities with demonstrated gifts of leadership (for example, student government, debate team, Boys' Nation, 4-H, Key Club, newspaper, community service, JROTC VARSITY ATHLETICS, INTRAMURAL SPORTS).
    • Category W. A student with demonstrated achievement in ECONOMICS or history (or other comparable high school studies) and interest in the study of such disciplines as economics AND leadership studies.

A NEARLY EQUAL number of students will be admitted in each category. This applies to the network as a whole, and to each of the twelve sites individually.

  1. Five out of every six students will be North Carolina residents. Determination of residence status will coincide with the procedures used by the University of North Carolina.
  2. One out of every six students will be a resident of ANOTHER NATION (NOT USA) SUCH AS
  • BRAZIL
  • ESTONIA
  • JORDAN
  • SAUDI ARABIA
  • TAIWAN
  • CANADA
  • ICELAND
  • KOREA
  • TURKEY
  • CHINA
  • INDIA
  • MEXICO
  • SOUTH AFRICA
  • CROATIA
  • JAPAN
  • NORWAY
  • SWITZERLAND
  • ZAMBIA

These international students are required to have sponsorship, and to AFFORD at least $25,000 tuition and $15,000 in residence fees annually to the State of North Carolina. The Governor of North Carolina, or the Governor's representative, will be authorized to make tuition waivers for some international students, and to establish -FROM THE TIME TO TIME- STANDARDS for their admission.

 

Procedures

North Carolina residents will be admitted by district allocation, based on FOURTEEN (14)districts identical to Congressional districts, as determined by the year 2020 census OR the North Carolina General Assembly.

  1. Applicants will have the opportunity to rank the twelve school sites in order of preference. This ranking of site preferences will be considered.
  2. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available spaces in the dormitories, a lottery will be employed to make random selections for the sake of equity. All qualified applicants are eligible for the lottery.
