This program begins with Grade 11, for juniors, and admits only students who are completing the tenth grade. Seniors can earn a North Carolina high school diploma. ANGEL is a "prep" school for admission to the public universities of North Carolina.
Our high school specializes in economics, geography, leadership studies, and
international languages. The N.C. School of the Arts specializes in performing
arts. The University of NC of Science and Mathematics is another statewide high
school.
In the Academies of National/Global Economic Leadership (ANGEL)the academic
program in --
- Grade 11:
- A conventional program, consisting of instruction in English, mathematics,
science, social studies, health, physical education, music and art. All
junior students will take the same class at the same time. Students will
study together in Grade 11.
- Students will take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) on the same day
and date near the end of the academic year, so that they can be advised
concerning academic work in Grade 12 (the senior year), and for admission
to a university. All junior students will take the standardized end-of-course
examinations for Grade 11 in all subjects, so that each student can be advised
concerning academic work in Grade 12 (the senior year), and for admission
to a university in North Carolina.
- Students will continue study of that foreign language which was studied
previously: for example, in Grade 10 or Grade 9. Many students will be studying
Spanish, French or another language.
- Grade 12:
- Students will be assisted in developing individualized programs of study
appropriate to their needs, interests, and abilities. All students will
be offered the opportunity for advanced study in the specialized disciplines:
economics, geography, and leadership studies. Seniors will study history
together. They will also study applied topics together: criminal justice,
management, etc.
- Seniors will continue study of the foreign language which they studied
in Grade 11. They will study together to improve their mastery of standard
English. All students will be offered the opportunity for beginning study
in a third international language, choosing from a list ("menu") of self-study
programs in conversational linguistics, with a focus on just one international
language (e.g., Arabic, Canton-Chinese, Mandarin-Chinese, German, Hausa,
Hindi, Portuguese, Swahili, Ukrainian, etc.). A total of twenty options
can be expected when the academies open. School staff will assist students
with paperwork required for admission to a public university in North Carolina.
This activity is part of the syllabus for a required senior course, "Orientation
to Colleges."
- All students will be offered the opportunity to enroll in the JROTC-type
elective course that combines the study of history ("Military History")
with physical education ("Fitness for High School Students").
The curriculum of ANGEL will be threefold:
- This is a college preparatory high school, and the standard high school courses required by the state for college entrants will be offered.
- Social and behavioral science courses will explore:
- Cultural Anthropology
- Economics
- Geography
- History
- Political Science
- Social Psychology
- Sociology
- Three languages will be required:
- One world-class language, i.e., English
- One previously studied in school, e.g., Spanish
- One other language, e.g., Swahili, or Hindi, or Arabic, etc.
The balanced, well-rounded curriculum will meet state graduation standards and college entrance requirements.
